Your score is the number of correctly typed characters divided by the time it took, in characters per minute. More typos mean a lower score, so this measures both speed and accuracy together.
Your keyboard type (membrane vs. mechanical), how familiar you are with the layout, and things like switching input methods all affect typing speed. A sentence you've never seen before will naturally be slower to type than one you've memorized.
For English text, the average adult types around 35-45 WPM (roughly 200-250 characters per minute), and skilled typists can exceed 70 WPM. Results vary with sentence difficulty and length.
The average adult types around 40 words per minute (roughly 200 characters per minute). Skilled typists can reach 65-75 words per minute or more. The most widely cited record for peak typing speed is 216 words per minute, set by Stella Pajunas in 1946 on an IBM electric typewriter.
Daily/weekly/monthly rankings collect each user's best score recorded within the last 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days. The all-time ranking includes every record since the site launched.
When multiple users share the same score, whoever recorded it first is shown at the higher rank.

A. Only correctly typed characters count toward your score, so more typos mean a lower score even if it takes the same amount of time.

A. A random sentence is picked from a pool each time to prevent memorizing one sentence and to measure your actual typing ability.
